The Human Rights Tribunal rendered its decision, on Friday, the 22nd of September 2006, concerning the suit filed against the City of Laval, Quebec, for its practice of beginning public sittings of City Council with the recitation of a prayer, contrary to the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. The suit was supported by the Mouvement laïque québécois (Quebec Secular Movement).

The Tribunal’s decision is in completely in favour of the complainant, Danielle Payette. The recitation of the prayer is considered contrary to the complainant’s freedom of religion and conscience and the City of Laval is ordered to cease the practice.
